A bus !..........are you sure ?

Yes, Bill Richards Racing does get involved in some fairly unusual projects. This 'Safari Bus' really is Mini powered and was a recent job for the workshop. Lee took it for a test drive and reported some instability whilst carrying passengers - the passengers (Bill and Sam) have not commented on their experiences.

New photos of Lee's Miglia - 02/06/03

Well it's almost finished -Lee's beautiful new Miglia gleams in the sun ! The car still has to have a few minor parts fitted but it it's mostly finished and certainly looks very special. Lee hopes to get it out on track in the very near future and we'll announce any dates of where you can see the car in the flesh as soon as they're available - more photos here

Race report from Lydden - 05/05/03

Track conditions were pretty good for SEMSEC's event at our local track. The Mini sounded a little 'off song' and we were all concerned how it might run as we'd worked out that it hadn't been rebuilt for eighteen months (a long time for a race engine !), however we managed to qualify the car on the third row and finish third overall (and first in class). Best lap-time was 46.8 seconds. Ron Watson and Allan Rawlings came first and second in their class with Allan recording his best ever lap time.

The fifth race of the day featured our Cosworth Metro, we had qualified in fifth and a very exciting race followed with excellent battles between our car and Peter Thurston's monster Escort (see above). The Metro achieved another class win and came home fourth overall with a best lap-time of 45.48 seconds.

Ron Watson has sent in a report of his day please click here to see how he got on

 Lee's Miglia project - 08/05/03

Lee is currently building a circuit racing Mini, it is being constructed to run under Mini 'Miglia' regulations. There is now a 'Miglia' page on this site so that you can follow the car's progress. The car is nearly complete and has been built to Lee's normal high standard and Bill Richards racing has put together one of our celebrated engine packages for the car. Lee has experienced quite a bit of success in sprinting over the last couple of seasons with his father Dave and we look forward with interest to his circuit racing debut later in 2003. Lee's Miglia page will available via the 'Racing' button on our main menu or by clicking here

Triangle Fire Protection - our newest sponsor - 06/05/03

http://www.trianglefire.co.ukThe SEMSEC race meeting on Bank Holiday Monday gave us a chance to show off the logos on the cars from our new sponsor, Triangle Fire Protection. It was great to see representatives from this local company at the circuit and we hope they enjoyed their day at Lydden. Click on their logo to go directly to their website

A report on how the days racing went will be published in the next few days

Bill Richards Racing at Silverstone - 02/05/03

The 26th of April saw the team venture far from their home circuit of Lydden to the SEMSEC event at Silverstone. This is the first time that this particular car has ventured out onto a 'long' circuit and the gearing was raised in order to cope with the faster track. Whilst the engine coped admirably, the car itself felt rather fragile and Bill thought that if the car was to be used regularly on these faster tracks, it would need steel doors put back on the car rather than the current GRP ones which flexed and flapped alarmingly at high speeds. Both Bill and Ron Watson had problems with oil coolers again but both cars managed to finish and achieved class wins.

Our next event is at Lydden on the 5th of May (Bank Holiday Monday)

First race of the 2003 season at Lydden - 12/04/03

Milly the Mini 2003Saturday saw the both the Metro and the Mini racing for the first time in 2003. The Metro hadn't attended the practice day and Bill found it pysically hard work to drive but practice went fairly well and the race itself saw the 1300cc machine setting some spectacular lap times, coming home fourth overall ( 1st in class C) behind two ridiculously fast Radicals and Peter Thurston's awesome, and very wide V8 Escort.

Ron Watson on the limit at Devil's ElbowThe Mini had a bit of a nightmare, practice didn't go well with a brand new oil cooler proving to be faulty, requiring some rapid spanner work in the pits. The race itself was looking quite promising but a racing incident involving Steve Weatherley, Brian Wray and Bill saw our Mini embedded in the tyre wall at Chessons and the other two forced to retire. The race was restarted but still proved to be very exciting with Ron Watson and Allan Rawlings dicing for position with Kevin Goater, all three in Minis finishing 5th, 6th and 7th overall (3rd, 4th and 5th in class) behind much quicker opposition.

Repairs are underway on the Mini (many thanks must go to Mini Spares for their help !) and the team are hoping that the they will have a far more successful outing at Silverstone on the 26th of April.

Practice Day at Lydden Circuit - 29/03/03

This was the first practice session of the 2003 season, Bill and the crew were in attendance as were several customers, Ron Watson, Alan Rawlings and Steve Luscombe with their race cars. Our race Mini has been re-shelled and this was a fine opportunity for a thorough shake-down. 'Mini World' magazine were on hand to test the Mini for a future article, Bill Sollis (top Mini Miglia racer and all-round nice bloke) took our car out for one session and seemed impressed by the development work on the car.

Minor technical problems shortened the days proceedings for our Mini (including a terminally damaged oil-cooler caused by debris from a exploding Ford Fiesta engine !) but Bill took out various customers cars and managed to provide them with a lot of potentially useful feedback. Overall, a pretty good day for most people and it was great to see some visitors including Mo Ovenden with her beautiful Mini pick-up and Nick Oakes albeit without his race Mini.

Ovenden & Signworx, new sponsors for the 2003 season - 02/04/03

Bill Richards racing is very pleased to announce that we have two new sponsors on board for the 2003 season. Ovendens have concentrated their efforts on Motorcycle sponsorship until now, but this season their logo will now be prominently displayed across the back of our race Mini. Signworx are another local company who have produced the new graphics for our race cars - we hope you like the new look for the 2003 race Mini, we reckon that it looks very fine indeed

The race Mini gets a new body shell - 05/03/03
Old body shell New body shell

Our 8 port Mini project had a pretty hard season last year and it was decided that a few changes needed to be made for 2003. The team decided to build a new stronger body shell incorporating lessons learned during the previous season - this new version incorporates a stronger cage which should increase overall stiffness. The scuttle area should benefit from a new steel box insert (rather than last years aluminium version) - this should help to address the problem of cracks appearing at the base of the screen where the body shell was twisting. Hopefully this new stronger (and slightly heavier) body shell should provide a good basis for new suspension developments. The team are currently transferring components from the old car to the new and will be testing at the next Lydden practice day on the 29th of March 2003.
