Rover Mini - Back to top

We have carried out extensive work for Rover including the homologation, engine building and testing of their Mini Cooper entry in the 1994 Monte Carlo rally which was driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Ron Crellin. Rover were granted the registration L33 EJB in recognition of Paddy Hopkirk's famous works Cooper 'S' 33 EJB which won the Monte in 1964. Despite severe restrictions on tuning we managed to get the modern 1275cc engine to produce 104 bhp. The car ran very well among a field of modern rally machinery but ultimately was handicapped by electrical problems outside our control. We were also responsible for the Rover France and Rover Switzerland entries.

In the same year a car (L54 CVP) prepared by us and driven by Russell Brookes and Neil Wilson competed in the RAC Rally finished 6th in class was the first Mini home. This was the first time a Mini had entered the rally in 10 years.

In 1995, we modified L54 CVP, again on behalf of Rover, in order that it could run in the Nürburgring 24 hour race. Driven by Tony Dron, John Brigden and Jeremy Coulter, it finished 92nd out of 180 starters and came first in its class. The car made history by being the first Mini ever to complete a 24 hour race. In 1996 we prepared a car for Tony Dron and Alistair Douglas. D555 GRX competed in the Monte Carlo rally and finished 69th overall and 2nd in the Group A class.

Juliette Wirtz and her husband Jim (sorry, Jim, we don't have a photograph of you) are keen rally enthusiasts and are prominent members of the Luxembourg Mini Club (Mighty Mini Frėnn). They also act as agents for us and will liaise with customers from continental Europe and assist with the logistics of car preparation when our linguistic skills fail....! Juliette and Jim will be happy to discuss your project and co-ordinate with us as necessary.

Nick Oakes racing at Lydden Circuit leads his group in the modified saloon car category. This car is always beautifully turned out and all credit must go to Nick and Anita for their excellent race preparation.

Steve Luscombe Back to top

Well we said we don't just work on Minis. Steve Luscombe is a regular competitor in the Historic Sports car category in this ex-works MG Midget. We built the engine for Steve's well-used car; now if only we could get our hands on the rest of the vehicle...(Steve, you've got to do something about that paintwork).

John Morrow  - Back to top

John Morrow and Tim Woods competed in the 2000 Monte Challenge rally in a standard 998cc Morris Cooper. John and Tim gave their car a makeover and ran in the 2001 event with a very special engine. Seen here at the Tutt Hill control on their way to France, members of the team followed their progress nightly via their own website. John and Tim were part of the Cooper Car Company's  team which competed in the January 2002 Monte Carlo Historique. (see the news page) For the this season John will be using a Mini Cooper S, also lovingly prepared by Bill Richards Racing. John Morrow has recently relocated to Seattle although he intends to return to Europe for selected events - we would all like to send John our best wishes with his new  position at the University of Washington, keep in touch John !

Geoff O'nion - Back to top

Geoff O'Nion & Nigel Hutchinson are regular competitors in a all kinds of marathon events all over Europe. You may have spotted their Morris Mini Cooper Mk 1 on Sky Sports recently as 'World Motor Sport' featured the 2002 Classic Marathon. Geoff and Nigel have just completed the HERO Winter Trial from Maastrichts to Monte-Carlo. Geoff reports:

"This was quite a hard rally with two night loops, one on Tuesday and the other on the last night upon reaching Monaco. We were around 12th overall and second in class (cars up to 1600cc), for most of the rally and this is how we started out on the final night loop in horrendous storm conditions. Eventually half the night section was cancelled due to fog and snow,

however, the very last regularity was fast with a very clever catch on the last junction, it caught most people out, some more than others. We lost 3 minutes on indecision, but still went up to finish 9th overall, however, the others in our class were not caught out quite so badly and we dropped to 3rd in our class. In all we were very pleased with the result and with an added bonus of winning the marque team prize (Prices Prodigies BMC) with the Appleton's in their Mini Cooper S and Roger Byford and Willy Cave in a MGB GT. As for the car, I feel that you may have done too good a job on putting this car together as it ran to perfection and seems to get better every rally. We had no mechanical issue and the only intervention on the rally was an electric fault which was attributed to a poor connection on an in line fuse I installed."

" Again my utmost thanks on a superbly prepared car the performance of which is credit to your workmanship"

Edgar Diaz - Back to top

Recently we have had some great projects in our workshop. Edgar Diaz from Montgomery, Alabama, asked us to undertake a nut and bolt restoration of a 1963 Cooper.

Edgar asked us to get 100+ bhp out of this motor. This objective was always going to be difficult to achieve given the 92 octane fuel prevalent in North America but  we did our best although we would guarantee only 85bhp!  Bill built a 1380cc engine but with slight adjustments to allow for the lower octane fuel, the To our (slight) surprise and Edgar's delight the engine delivered 120bhp "at the wheels" at Peter Baldwin's rolling road.

The lower photo shows the heart of the matter - here is the engine bay which we think looks very nice and traditional despite being a few cubic centimetres bigger than John Cooper originally intended for this model! From the upper photo you can see all the effort that's been put into restoring the interior to the original Cooper specification.

Nigel Brown - Back to top

Here's a nice looking Mini - 150 BHP at the wheels makes it pretty attractive too! Bill doesn't see all that many Turbo projects but this is a very fine example. It's running 1.3 litre turbo engine but with a nearly standard gearbox at the moment which may have to be upgraded soon to cope with all that power. Check out all the detailing - twin pipes with heat shield, transparent panel in the bonnet, extra vents, there's been some effort put into this one !

Paul Wiltshire - Back to top

Please note - all pictures are courtesy of MiniWorld Magazine

You just can't beat an 8 Port engine, Bill loves working on them as they always present some special challenges to an engine builder. Paul sent these details in to the website about his lovely Mk 1 Mini:

Paul Wiltshire's Multi concours winning MK1 1967 Arden 8-Port, as featured on the front cover of MiniWorld Nov '01, described as 'Best Modified Mini in the World' 'Best custom Mini in existence' - MiniWorld Magazine, 140bhp @ the wheels (Wilshers Rolling Road), 1380cc all steel - revs to 8500rpm!

Allan Rawlings - Back to top

Powered by one of Bill Richards' 1380cc motors, Allan Rawlings Mini is sponsored by Ashford Coachworks (Kent) Ltd. Allan and his Mini have just finished their first season (2001) - they've been getting quicker  at every outing and have finished every event that  they've entered,  a tribute to both the car and it's driver ! The car is always immaculately prepared - a fact not wasted on the race scrutineers who comment on the car each time they encounter it, no prizes for guessing who does their paintwork !
