Served
his apprenticeship at the world renowned BMC Special Tuning Division, Abingdon,
Oxfordshire in the 1970s. •
Since 1977 he has been running his own engine tuning and car preparation
business. With a team compliment of
five, Bill Richards Racing (www.billrichardsracing.com)
specialises in the building of tuned ‘A’ Series engines and is one of the
UK’s leading Mini specialists. •
The engine of his current Mini Clubman steel race car has the highest known
output (188bhp at the wheels) of a normally aspirated “A” series motor. •
In 1994 Bill was commissioned by Rover to build the engines for several Mini
Coopers including the car driven Paddy Hopkirk and Ron Crellin on the 30th
anniversary of their Monte Carlo rally victory. •
Bill is a circuit racer with an international reputation. He has been the class
winner in the SEMSEC Silhouette Championship on multiple occasion’s and held
the BARC Modified Saloon Car Championship in 2001-2002, and won the 2005 BARC
Track & Race saloon Championship. In addition, he has also competed in races
and hillclimbs in Europe and the USA. •
Bill is a Racing Instructor at the Goodwood Circuit, East Sussex, permanent
driving instructor at the
Lydden circuit, near Dover, Kent and gives tuition at Castle Combe, Wiltshire. •
Numerous articles on Bill’s engines and cars have appeared in national and
